This is a quick and practical guide to thinking more clearly.
Do not just read this for entertainment.
DO the tasks, and bookmark this to work through in order. We’re going to do a quick audit of your human hardware, firmware and software.
Your hardware is your body.
Your firmware controls HOW your hardware interacts with your software: your desires, instincts, and habits.
Your software is your mental, physical & digital space: Your mental & emotional models, info that you consume, your inbox, your to-do system.
Step 1: HARDWARE
The equivalent of defragging your hard drive & cleaning out the gunk under your keyboard.
Address any major deficiencies in sleep, exercise and diet: the building blocks of mental clarity.
The mind is HOUSED in the body.
But when things get busy, we forget this.
Step 2: FIRMWARE:
Update faulty thought circuitry through psychotherapy, meditation, internal work, yoga, journaling, breath work, visualisation.
Align your programming with your desired outcome.
Step 3: SOFTWARE
Clear out your physical and digital space, including your desktop and inbox.
If your desktop looks like this: https://www.mikenickells.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/MyDirtyDesktop.jpg – then consider the mental drag that’s putting on your daily workflow.
Maximise your bandwidth so you can fully engage with the task in front of you.
We pay so much attention to what we put in our mouths, but not what we put into our minds.
Go on an information-diet.
Only consume things which you’ve paid more than £100 for. Or at least content that YOU have actively subscribed to.
Surround yourself with people who share your goals and tune out those who don’t.
Disable notifications on your phone.
Use a to-do app to allocate tasks, create time boxes, and capture new tasks quickly.
I use TickTick
Practical steps recap:
1) Fix any major hardware faults: Are you sleeping, exercising, eating, meditating?
2) Firmware update: Start an internal practice, journal, or register with a psychotherapist, whichever resonates most.
3) Software update: Dedicate an hour to clearing your desktop. Go on an information-diet. Do a brain-dump into your to-do app.
I hope you found this useful.
