How to Spot Biohacking Scams

By PropaneFitness · November 23, 2025

What Makes a Real Biohack

A biohack is a behavior or a tool designed to accelerate physiological processes or exploit a principle of physiology. That’s the definition. The reality? The biohacking space is riddled with red herrings and scammy products.

Unless you’re working full-time in health and fitness, you don’t have the bandwidth to sift through every claim and assess the underlying data yourself. You need evidence-based synthesizers who can filter the noise for you. Look for coaches and practitioners without ulterior motives and no financial incentives tied to what they’re recommending. If someone’s heavily sponsored, take what they say with a pinch of salt.

The biohack phenomenon emerged because people want faster results and easier shortcuts. We all want the magic pill. But biohacking, when done properly, should rest on solid physiological principles.

Fix the Holes in Your Bucket First

Before diving into biohacking, stop doing the things that are making you worse. This isn’t novel, but it’s foundational:

  • Sleep 7-8 hours per night
  • Stop smoking
  • Stop drinking
  • Stop damaging yourself

Once you’ve plugged those basic holes, then you can layer in advanced strategies. This is the progression. Don’t chase nootropics or exotic interventions while you’re running on 5 hours of sleep.

The basics always work. Sleep, lifting, stress management, clean diet, meditation. It’s boring. Everyone says they know this. But most people haven’t actually implemented it consistently.

A Framework for Assessing Any Biohack

The Sniff Test: Can You Spot the Red Flags?

Does the claim sound too good to be true? Does it require zero effort on your part? If both are yes, it’s probably a scam.

Is There a Physiological Principle Behind It?

Lifting works because you apply stress your body can recover from, then supercompensate. It’s a principle you can articulate. Many legitimate biohacks have ancient or evolutionary precedent. Light therapy, for instance, has deep evolutionary roots in human circadian biology.

Separate Wants From Facts

Do you want this to be true, or is it actually plausible based on evidence? Be honest about the difference.

Hormetic Effect vs. Loan: Which Are You Taking?

Is the intervention producing a hormetic effect, where your body adapts and comes back stronger? Or are you taking an exogenous boost (caffeine, alcohol, performance drugs) that you’ll pay the price for later? Hormesis is sustainable. Loans always come due.

Match the biohack to your actual goals. If you’re trying to build muscle, muscle-building strategies matter. If you’re trying to improve sleep, optimize sleep first. Specificity beats generic optimization every time.

Practical Testing

If you’re data-minded, you can run your own experiments. Send off a blood panel, implement an intervention, measure the result, and decide whether to keep it. Use wearables and spreadsheets to track subjective measures like mood, sleep quality, and performance.

But understand that science is always delayed. The research catches up to practice eventually. If you want to skip the experimentation phase and just implement what works, the basics are your foundation. They’ve stood the test of time for a reason.
