Doctor’s Review of the Wim Hof Method

I did the Wim Hof Method for 3 years.

7 lessons learned:

1) YOU BUILD A TOLERANCE THE DISCOMFORT VERY QUICKLY 🥶️

For the first week, you’re talking yourself out of it every time.
Soon enough, it’s just normal Tuesday morning.

2) CHEAPER THAN COFFEE ☕️

A cold shower wakes you up hard.

You feel stimulated for the rest of the day, without the jitters that caffeine gives you.

3) NOT A TESTOSTERONE BOOSTER 🍆️

WokeTwitter gurus often claim that cold showers boost testosterone.

False. No evidence to support this, and if anything may have the opposite effect.

4) DISCOMFORT COMES FROM RESISTANCE 🧘‍♂️

The difficulty in cold exposure comes from how much you’re tensing up and hating it.

Choose to relax into it. The divers reflex kicks in and you feel calm.

Let go of your resistances and ↑ your enjoyment.

5) GOOD FOR RECOVERY, BAD FOR MUSCLE GROWTH 💪

Evidence suggests that cold exposure accelerates recovery, but blunts the muscle hypertrophy response.

Minor effects, but useful if you’re approaching competition and you need to recover fast at the expense of growth.

6) BREATH IS THE INTERFACE BETWEEN ENERGY AND CONSCIOUSNESS

When you’re stuck in your head, use the breathing method to get back into your body.

The mind quiets.

It’s nitroglycerine for meditation.

7) ITS NOT THE CURE-ALL

It’s a bit of fun, not the solution to all your problems.

You’ll benefit more from

  • Going sober
  • Lifting 3x/week
  • Sorting your diet
  • Meditating
  • Limiting screen time
